Russian Drones Strike Kyiv Bridges, Disrupting Transport Across the City

Kyiv has faced a new wave of Russian aerial attacks targeting key infrastructure, with drones striking major bridges across the Dnipro River and causing significant disruption to transportation in the Ukrainian capital.

On Saturday, October 3, a Russian strike hit Kyiv's Northern Bridge, damaging part of the road surface and overhead trolleybus power lines. Traffic was temporarily suspended in one direction as emergency and repair teams were sent to the site, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The latest strike came only a day after repeated attacks had damaged the city's Southern Bridge, creating severe traffic congestion and making it more difficult for residents to travel between Kyiv's eastern and western banks.

Northern Bridge Hit by a Russian Strike

The Northern Bridge, also known as Pivnichnyi Bridge, is one of the major crossings over the Dnipro River in Kyiv.

According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the bridge was struck during a Russian air attack early Saturday morning. The impact damaged the road surface and trolleybus electrical cables running above the bridge. Authorities subsequently restricted traffic while emergency services assessed the damage.

Reports identified the weapon as a Russian jet-powered drone. Ukrainian and local sources reported that the attack occurred shortly after an air-raid alert was issued in the capital.

The immediate impact was mainly on transportation. Vehicles were unable to use part of the crossing, while public transport services had to be adjusted because of the damaged electrical infrastructure.

Earlier Attacks Hit the Southern Bridge

The Northern Bridge attack followed several strikes on Kyiv's Southern Bridge.

The Southern Bridge was hit repeatedly by Russian drones beginning on October 1. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attacks damaged parts of the bridge, including a support structure, road surface and protective barriers. The bridge was subsequently closed to road traffic and metro services.

The repeated attacks created major traffic problems across Kyiv. Long lines of cars and buses formed as commuters searched for alternative routes across the Dnipro.

The situation became particularly difficult because Kyiv's two sides are heavily interconnected. More than one-third of the capital's approximately three million residents live on the eastern bank, while many government institutions, companies and workplaces are located on the western bank.

Three Bridges Affected

By October 3, Russian aerial attacks had caused full or partial restrictions on three of Kyiv's major road bridges.

The disruption is significant because the Dnipro River divides the capital into eastern and western areas. Although Kyiv has several crossings, the closure or restriction of multiple bridges simultaneously can quickly create severe congestion.

Associated Press described the attacks as part of a pattern that has increasingly affected civilian infrastructure in the capital, while Ukrainian authorities have warned that the strikes could have a major impact on everyday life.

Videos and photographs from Kyiv showed long traffic queues following the attacks, with some residents forced to change their routes or continue parts of their journeys on foot.

Why Are the Bridges Being Targeted?

The purpose of the attacks remains a matter of dispute.

Russia's Defense Ministry has said that some of the infrastructure targeted in Kyiv was being used for military purposes. Moscow has previously denied systematically targeting civilians in its air campaigns.

Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, have described the attacks as part of a broader campaign against critical infrastructure designed to disrupt life in the capital.

The attacks are taking place as Ukraine prepares for another difficult winter. Russian strikes have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, raising concerns about electricity, heating and water supplies during the colder months.

The strategic importance of Kyiv's bridges therefore goes beyond transportation. Disrupting major crossings can affect the movement of civilians, public transportation and potentially logistical activity across the city.

The Wider Wave of Russian Drone Attacks

The bridge strikes are occurring alongside a broader increase in Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine.

On October 3, Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia had launched a large number of drones during an overnight attack. Ukrainian forces said they intercepted many of them, although several strikes still reached their targets.

The attacks have also affected residential and commercial areas in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia may be preparing a sustained campaign against energy infrastructure ahead of winter.

At the same time, Ukraine continues to conduct drone attacks against targets inside Russia, including energy and industrial facilities. Both sides have increasingly relied on long-range drones as an important component of the conflict.

The strikes on Kyiv's bridges mark another escalation in the pressure being placed on Ukraine's capital.

The Northern Bridge was damaged on October 3, shortly after repeated Russian drone attacks had already forced the closure of the Southern Bridge. The resulting restrictions have caused major traffic disruptions and complicated daily travel for hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents.

The full purpose and strategic consequences of the bridge attacks remain subjects of debate. Russia says infrastructure it targets can have military significance, while Ukrainian officials describe the attacks as an attempt to disrupt civilian life and critical infrastructure.

What is clear is that the attacks have created significant transportation problems in Kyiv at a time when Ukraine is also facing increasing pressure on its energy infrastructure.

As the war continues, the condition of the city's bridges, roads and energy systems will remain an important factor in determining how well Kyiv can maintain normal life under sustained aerial attacks.
